17-4 Stainless Steel

Considered to be one of the most popular steel alloys because of its adaptability, parts forged in 17-4 stainless steel are highly sought after. This alloy mostly consists of chromium (Cr) (15% – 17.5%) and roughly the same amount of copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) (3.0% – 5.0%). The balance element for this alloy, along with all stainless steel alloys is iron (Fe). Other elements that make up stainless steel 17-4 include, silicon (Si), phosphorous (P), sulfur (S), and nitrogen (N). Stainless steel grade 304 is classified as UNS S17400 and is often referred to as 17-4 PH, which indicates that that alloy is precipitation-hardening. 

Additionally hardening on 17-4 stainless steel parts is achieved through a heat-treating process at a short time and low temperature. 

Known for its incredible strength and moderate corrosion resistance, 17-4 stainless steel is used in a variety of industries, including aerospace, marine, and power generation.
